Welcome to my website, my name is Rob Deere and I am a battlefield guide. I am an associate member of the Guild of Battlefield Guides and a member of the Western Front Association.
I work as a freelance guide for a number of companies as a battlefield guide and tour director for military tours, adult and schools tours. I also have a focus on tours for Australians and New Zealanders which includes private, bespoke tours. You can read more detail on the relevant pages.
As a former British Army infantry officer, I have had a long professional and personal interest in the history of warfare and bring this understanding, insight and passion for military history to my guiding. You can read more about this on the About Me page.
My main areas of interest are the Western Front and Italian Front of the Great War of 1914-18, Normandy and the Italian Campaigns of World War 2. I also guide in Berlin for the 1933-45 period and the Cold War.
Rob was our guide for a week-long tour of the battlefields in France and Belgium. As a retired history teacher, I was impressed by his ability to address a group with a range of knowledge, from limited to well informed. He demonstrated profound knowledge, commitment and never-failing enthusiasm and was most obliging in looking after individual requests. His behind the scenes organisation was faultless.
Rob, thank you so much for the most amazing two days, despite the weather! I will be requesting your services next year.
The Royal School of Artillery deployed on a Battlefield Study of Monte Cassino with Staffride Ltd, our particular thanks goes to Rob Deere who was the group’s guide and historian. He was energetic, totally professional and delivered a completely interactive experience. On behalf of the Royal School of Artillery, I would like to thank you for an excellent battlefield study.
What a superb trip! Thank you very much indeed for being our guide in Italy last week. Your knowledge and enthusiasm gave us a first class experience of visiting the battlefield and understanding what happened. I think we will all reflect on the ground and tactical issues for some while – inspiring and sobering in equal measure. Very best of luck with future tours
In September 2015 I was leading a school group from Australia on a World War 1 study tour. So delighted were we with Rob’s work, that we are already planning to book him for our next trip and would highly recommend everyone else consider Rob Deere as their guide.
Thank you for the excellent trip you ran on behalf of Staffride to North Italy for the QDG last week. Your knowledge, insight and detail brought the battlefields of yesteryear to life. Your delivery from strategic to tactical and examples you highlighted to us were excellent and timely. I think we achieved exactly the right balance of battlefield study within the wider context of battlefield tour. It was everything else, from your junior leadership insights to light cavalry development discussions that made last week so very valuable to such a wide audience. I know from chatting to everyone present that they all learned a lot (more than they thought). I very much hope to work with you again when I’m in my next post at ARTD.”
I was part of a group of 20 Australians who recently visited the battlefields of the Western Front. Our tour leader Mr. Rob Deere managed to pitch his commentary at a level that kept all of our participants engaged and interested. His depth of knowledge was outstanding but not overbearing. Rob had a great sense of humour which he used to great effect and he was always willing to spend extra time with us and with our personal pilgrimages. That our trip was so successful and informative is testament to his leadership, knowledge and guiding skills.
Rob Deere is an accredited guide and holder of badge number 80 of the Guild of Battlefield Guides.
